Avalanche Beacons

Avalanche beacons are probably the most essential piece of equipment for anyone who plans on exploring the backcountry during the winter. The inherent risks involved with this sort of outdoor activity makes a location device necessary in the event of an emergency. Many people over the years have owed their lives to these devices.

Avalanche beacons are manufactured in a few basic configurations. The number of antennas on a beacon can be an important factor to consider when purchasing. The most basic is the single antenna variation, which can have quite a long range assuming the receiving and transmitting beacons are lined up. However, when out of alignment, the range is significantly shortened.

Two and Three antenna avalanche beacons are generally the preferred devices of professionals. These devices use the multiple antennas to more accurately locate the buried signal. These beacons also offer the added security of a directional indicator, allowing for a faster rescue of the victim.
