Avalanche Classes
Avalanche classes are the ideal way to gain the knowledge
and experience necessary for surviving in the winter backcountry. These
classes can are offered through a number of outdoor organizations. Most
of these organizations base their training on techniques taught through
The American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE)
and The American Mountain-Guides Association (AMGA).
AIARE courses are split into three categories. The level one courses
are designed to provide basic avalanche education to novice or recreational
outdoor enthusiasts. Levels two and three are for the more advanced
backcountry explorers and provide a much more intensive education.
The guide programs offered by AMGA are designed offer training in all
aspects of mountaineering, including alpine and ski mountaineering.
AMGA certification is recognized by over 20 member countries of the
International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA). Both
the AMGA and the AIARE have decades of experience guiding their educational
programs.
