Avalanche Probe

When searching for buried victims, an avalanche probe can be of tremendous help. In fact, experts recommend that anyone that enters the backcountry have one of these devices in their pack. These probes are rarely more than $50-60 to purchase.

An avalanche probe, when used properly, is an ideal way to find the exact location and depth of a buried victim. They are designed to easily push through layers of snow and ice in order to quickly locate a person buried underneath. Keep in mind that if the victim also has a beacon, the search can be done that much faster, thereby increasing the chances of survival.

The average avalanche probe is between seven and eight feet long. However, longer probes can be purchased if needed. These items often include depth measurements, so that the rescuers know exactly how far down the victim is buried.
